Making monsters!

Following on from the ‘monster theme’, we ran a series of workshops that involved creating mythical monsters or fictional characters in a variety of ways ranging from mask making, sculptures and singing and movement workshops.

The kids created monster masks by decorating them with different materials. This workshop went really well with all the groups; some masks were not so monster like, but all were fantastic creations, looking bright and colourful and fit for a carnival!

The kids enjoyed putting their own unique touch to them and much photos were taken after of them posing with big beaming smiles.

We made the mistake of accidenlty bringing pots of glitter in our bags to one workshop and half way through the session we noticed (a little too late) the glitter was now smeared across faces, in hair, on clothes, on walls, up noses….but was worth it to see big cheerful grins!

introduction workshop

In our initial workshops we decided to start with very simple activities to enable us to get to know the kids and to get a feel of their abilities.

For one of our very first workshops we chose a very basic activity that would be both straightforward and fun for the kids but that would also compromise our very bad Spanglish!

We gave the children large pieces of paper in order to draw around themselves and to use as a template for the bases of a mythical character or a ‘monster’ they have created. It was a great chance to use a variety of material and see how imaginative the kids can be!

They really enjoyed drawing around each other and were creative in making their different monsters and inventing names and different gruesome characteristics to make each their own and unique.

The kids presented their work at the end of the session and it was great to see the pride they took in their work and how respectful they were when listening to one another. This is something that we would like to make more time to do in other workshops.

Beinvendios to Nina Y Laura's Blog!

We still can’t believe we are now approaching our third month here! Wow, how time flies when you are having fun!

Adapting to south American ways has taken some time to get the swing of but we are now both experts on jumping on and off moving buses crammed to the brim of people, babies, food, animals….., avoiding huge trucks bombing down the crazy roads of Guayaquil and being sweaty betties on the long and bumpy bus journeys…

but we always look forward to endless fresh fruit shakes or a cold coconut at the end of a long day and of course seeing all the kid’s happy faces and receiving big wet kisses after a workshop!
